Kiros is a 4 piece band hailing from the north (Calgary, in Alberta Canada to be exact). With their energetic stage presence, awesome music, and ability to connect with the crowd, they are likely to become big in the music scene. I've had the chance to meet them on two seperate occasions, and both times they were the most down to earth, kick ass people I've ever met. I hope that in their rising fame they don't lose that. It's going to take them far. They recently took the time to answer some questions for us.
First, tell me who am I speaking to?
You are speaking with Ryan.
Now I know you guys are from up north (aka Canada), but tell us a little more about the band's history.
Barry and I met 8 years ago and decided that night that we would like to play music together. At first it was just a high school thing that we did once in awhile, but a couple of years ago, things took off and we started touring full time. In the years to follow, we went through a few member changes, released a couple of EPs, and kept touring as hard as we could. That brings us up to this year which marks our first US release. Our full length record "A Single Strand" hit stores down here on March 18th which also marked the first date on our full US tour with the Audition and Hit the Lights on the Smartpunk Spring Break '08 tour.
I know that your band name comes from the Greek word for time, could you explain why you choose this and what it means to you?
We did in fact derive the band name Kiros from the Greek word "Kairos" which means "divine time" or "God's time". It is an eternal perspective of time that goes beyond the human limitations of time.
I'm sure touring must be a blast. Describe a day in your life while you're on tour.
Touring is great and days vary so much as it goes. Somedays we end up driving all night and day to make it to the next show, somedays we have a lot of time and we'll go find a tennis court and play a few matches. However, I think that I speak for all of us when I say that one of most important parts of all our days on tour is when we get to drink an Arizona. We are in love with Arizona... In fact, I think I'm going to drink a Mucho Mango tonight!!
I've seen you guys in concert, and you put on an amazing performance, but if you had to describe your own show visually and musically in one sentence, what would it be?
I'm glad you enjoyed the show!! I would say that our 2 biggest focuses when we play are energy and connectivity. We want people to not only hear the music, but to feel it and to experience what we have experienced through writing it and performing it.
If you had to describe your music to people in 3 word, what would they be?
At the top of our myspace page, it says "pop/rock/alternative".
What is your favorite song to perform live?
I would say that my favorite song to play live would probably have to be "Heaven". That song means a lot to me!!
Along with the last question, where is your favorite place to play a show?
I don't think I could pick a favorite place to play. I love playing shows and every new town is a new experience with new people to meet!!
Now for some tough questions...
If you were stranded on island with a cd player and only one cd, what would you hope that it was?
The CD I would pick to have on the island with me would probably be Collective Soul's self-titled album.
What would be your worst nightmare to have to listen to while stranded on that island?
Worst nightmare of a CD to be stranded with would probably be our first demo that we recorded while we were still in high school!!
What are the top 5 albums that you couldn't live without?
Top 5 albums(in no particular order):
1. Collective Soul - self-titled
2. The Wallflowers - Bringing Down the Horse
3. Eve 6 - Horroscope
4. Vanessa Carlton - Be Not Nobody
5. Refused - The Shape of Punk to Come
If your life had a theme song, what would it be?
Life theme song... well, if Arizona has a theme song, then it would probably be that!!
Now for some fun questions!
Who is your favorite cartoon character, and why?
Probably Wakko Warner from the Animaniacs... Because he's hilarious!!
Power Rangers or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?
Ninja Turtles... No questions about it!!
I know you have a mannequin for your merch ,and on the spring break 08 tour, certain members of other band were jealous and made off with body parts. Did you ever get them back, or is he still headless and legless?
Oh, Eduardo!! He is an extremely faithful member of the Kiros team. He never had a head to begin with and he no longer has arms. I have no idea where they are. I do know that one got destroyed as the Audition used it to break a lock off of their trailer hitch that we put on there and didn't give them a key for. haha. Those guys are awesome. There's no other band that I would love to have had Eduardo's arms stolen and destroyed by!!
Tell us something interesting about yourself.
Something interesting about myself... I used to have such a bad bed-wetting problem when I was young that the doctors gave me an alarm system that would go off if I began to wet the bed.
Now, to end this interview I'd like to know, who really finished the 4x4 first?
And to be completely honest, I was in fact the first one of us to solve the 4x4 rubik's cube. However, Zoltan, our tour manager was the first of us to solve the 3x3, so all the credit should really go to him. He's the true pioneer in the Kiros crew!!
