I remember hearing about this album and a lot of people were really disappointed because it was going to be Digital Only release. Then people discovered that it was an album of b-sides and realised that they already had basically all the tracks. Bands are constantly doing things like this. The songs which they don’t think are good enough for their real albums get stuck on b-side and then when they’re not doing anything for a while they chuck them all on one CD to keep interest going. It’s the same sort of thing as when a band releases a Greatest Hits after about 4 albums – it’s just to keep going while they sort out a new sound.
So while this album is generally good, it’s nothing spectacular. The tracks are all reminiscent of the distinct sound of the album era they were released from, but as rejected album tracks, they’re generally not bad. For me it’s the track, ‘Choke Me’, from their self titled album, I like the most. I love the rawness of their material at that time. And it’s a shame that it’s the only song from that era to have made it onto the EP. However, ‘The Back Of Your Mouth’ also picks up on this level of rawness, which leaves me with a pleased feeling that they have kept that older material on here.
Overall it’s not an essential album to own, it’s nothing that’s going to blow you out of your seat. The songs are decent, but not astounding. But if you loved the latest album, this is most likely going to appeal to you, as most of the tracks on the EP is from that album.
